An homage

In case you haven't heard the exuberant, full-of-life Stevey Irwin was killed today by a stingray while filming "Ocean's Deadliest" near the Great Barrier Reef. I don't think there is or was a man as passionate about life as Irwin alive on this planet so it is certainly unfortunate and sad to say goodbye. The saddest part will be to see his kids grow up without a dad that absolutely adored them.

Also, in sad news, Andre Agassi has bowed out of USTA in a tearful exit after his third round loss to some punk Becker. These life events sure bring it home to you. I'm getting older and life is not slowing down for me.

I have mixed feelings about this one Dave. Irwin, on the whole was mildly-moderately annoying with his crocodile Dundee wannabe accent and outrageous behavior around creatures that most people feel terror around. Eulogies always spin the best about an individual and that is the decent thing to do.

Without disrespecting a family man, I think its safe to say that this man had no respect for deadly animals (I teach my children respect for nature). I don't know what he was trying to prove or if his antics were success motivated but animals have defense mechanisms for a reason and those are induced by fear, self preservation or food. Therefore to jump on the back of a cricky crock is "gutsy" it is also very very rude and a bite is what you get.

I have heard articles saying he was trying to de-villianize these beasts but attacking them in their homes and getting away with it (most times), is not good publicity. If fact it seems counter productive only serving to increase fear and loathing of the animal in question. In fact it was always about the 'brag'- 'here I am with the worlds deadliest ________ and I am about to put my hand into its nest and grab it.'

Sadly, millions of people die every day, some with children, some without, some accomplished, some destitute. I have to say that poor Steve, while sad, was toying with death on a consistent basis and grabbing a skunk by the tail can only lead to one thing...
